Clayton rose instantly, lunging forward with a lockup. Mark met him head-on, delivering two thunderous European uppercuts that snapped Clayton’s head back. Mark grabbed Clayton’s wrist, whipping him hard toward the end of the hall, but Clayton reversed the momentum, catching Mark on the rebound and driving him spine-first into a heavy steel fire door with an unforgiving overhead belly-to-belly suplex!

*CRASH!*

The heavy fire door shuddered on its hinges. Before Clayton could drop down to apply a finishing hold, a sudden, concussive crash of shattering glass and splintered wood echoed up from the stairwell shaft below—followed by the heavy scrape of metal violently colliding with the central admissions desk on the first floor. Both men froze.

Through the black mesh of his skull plate, Clayton’s eyes flicked toward the stairwell. Recognizing that the final stage of the hunt was converging below, Clayton released his grip, backed away three slow, measured steps, and slipped through the heavy fire doors into the darkened stairwell.

Mark pushed himself up against the steel frame, wiping sweat and a fresh trickle of blood from his eyebrow. He drew a deep, ragged breath, tightened the knot on his torn hospital gown, and stalked silently down the corridor toward the first floor.

11:50 PM — First Floor: Triage Vestibule & Admissions Stairwell

The ambient drone in the stairwell dropped into a sickening, rhythmic pulse, like a dying heartbeat echoing through hollow cast-iron pipes.

Amber Payne pushed through the bent steel doors of the triage vestibule. The curled horns of her crimson oni mask grazed a hanging fluorescent tube, sending a long, distorted shadow flickering across the shattered drywall. Dust hung thick in the stagnant air. At her feet lay the splintered remains of an old oak intake divider, smashed apart from an earlier collision. She stepped over the debris, her boots crunching on glass—

*CREAAAK—THUD!*

From the bottom landing of the stairwell, Clayton Halliburton stepped into the amber gloom, his white ballistic skull plate stark against the darkness. He stopped the instant he saw her. Across the vestibule, Amber Payne went still too, the curled horns of her crimson oni mask catching the dim light. For one long, charged second, the two masked monsters simply looked at each other across the wreckage—no lunge, no lockup, no wasted motion. They were on the same side, and both of them knew it.

Clayton gave a single, curt nod. Amber returned it, then tipped her chin toward the darkness beyond the admissions counter. Neither spoke. There was no need. Whatever tension had crackled between them settled into cold, shared purpose as they took up positions on opposite sides of the vestibule and waited.

*DING...*

The sudden, piercing chime of a mechanical service bell echoed from the darkened admissions counter thirty feet down the hall. There was nobody standing at the desk.

*CREEEAAK... BANG!*

At the far end of the vestibule, the main lobby fire doors swung slowly open on rusted hinges, revealing the cavernous, blood-red glow of the central rotunda where heavy, ragged footsteps were approaching fast. Clayton’s masked gaze flicked from the swinging doors back to Amber. Amber nodded once toward the open rotunda—acknowledging that the final prey was stepping directly into the trap.

Without a word, Clayton turned and stalked into the shadow of the main lobby entrance, while Amber melted back behind the registration partition to cut off any retreat.

11:52 PM — The Central Admissions Lobby

The survivors were converging on the massive first-floor lobby. Mark Cross burst through the double doors, his face bruised and covered in sweat. Waiting for him in the center of the lobby was GT, his jagged vampire mask catching the dim emergency light, his long trench coat hanging in tatters.

"Well, well," GT purred behind his mask. "The last patient standing."

Mark didn't answer with words. He charged. GT reacted instantly, throwing a spinning enzuigiri that cracked across Mark's jaw, staggering him backward. GT went for a flying forearm off the registration desk, but Mark caught him out of mid-air, drove GT's spine into the terrazzo floor with a bone-crushing powerslam, and immediately transitioned into a grounded crossface, hooking both of GT's arms in an inescapable trap!

GT thrashed against the hold, his mask grinding into the cold floor, but Mark wrenched back with terrifying torque until GT reluctantly tapped out!

*TAP! TAP! TAP!*

The referee called for the bell. Mark released the hold and stood up, his chest heaving. Overhead, the hospital speakers buzzed.

Mia Rivera (over P.A.): "A monster has been eliminated."

11:56 PM — The Admissions Desk

Mark had barely straightened when a shadow detached itself from the darkened stairwell. Clayton Halliburton stepped into the amber gloom, his bone-white skull plate immaculate, his singlet dark with sweat. There were no words. The two collided in a brutal, hard-hitting exchange. Mark fired stinging forearm shivers, but Clayton absorbed them, locked Mark in a waistlock, and drove him into the terrazzo floor with an unforgiving series of rolling German suplexes. Mark fought to his feet, trying for a desperation Go 2 Sleep, but Clayton slipped out the back, tripped Mark's leg, and locked in a punishing, inverted crossface submission. Mark resisted with everything he had, but with his energy completely drained from three hours of war, his arm went limp, and the referee called for the bell!

Mia Rivera (over P.A.): "A patient has been eliminated."

12:02 AM — The Final Elimination

Silence fell over the shattered lobby. In the center of the room stood Clayton Halliburton and Amber Payne, their masks smeared with soot and sweat.

AYA charged into the lobby to avenge Mark, but Amber Payne intercepted her from behind the registration counter, driving AYA into the hardwood desk with a devastating running boot, followed instantly by a vicious, driving Pain Killer across a pile of shattered computer monitors! Amber hooked both legs tightly.

ONE!

TWO!

THREE!

Mia Rivera (over P.A.): "A patient has been eliminated. All patients have been eliminated. The winners of CODE BLACK... THE MONSTERS! The surviving monsters are instructed to report to the lobby."

Outside, the maintenance crew moved through the dark. At the side of the building, a heavy steel service door was unbolted and dragged open, giving onto a short concrete ramp that sloped down to the parking lot. There, the bus idled, its engine rumbling low. Paramedics and Splat! medical staff worked quickly, loading the battered, eliminated competitors onto stretchers and guiding the walking wounded down the ramp and through the side door to the waiting vehicle. One by one, the injured wrestlers disappeared aboard, wrapped in blankets, nursing bruises, and processing the brutal night they had survived.

At the main glass entrance, the heavy iron chains and padlocks were finally unbolted and dragged away, and the heavy glass doors were pushed open, allowing the cold autumn night air to rush into the suffocating, dust-filled lobby.

12:08 AM — The Lobby

The hospital lobby was silent now, save for the faint creak of settling debris and the distant hum of the idling bus outside.

From the eastern corridor, a figure emerged from the shadows. The horned oni mask gleamed faintly in the dim emergency lighting. Amber Payne moved slowly, deliberately, her boots crunching over broken glass and plaster dust. Her breathing was heavy, controlled. She stopped near the center of the lobby, surveying the wreckage around her.

From the western stairwell, another figure descended. The bone-white skull plate caught the pale moonlight filtering through the cracked windows. Clayton Halliburton stepped into the lobby with cold, measured precision, his posture rigid, his movements methodical. He stopped across from Amber, and the two masked figures stood facing each other in the eerie stillness.

Neither spoke.

Then, from the darkened administrative hallway behind the ruined reception desk, a third figure appeared.

Tall. Draped in flowing black robes. A skeletal white mask with hollow, empty eye sockets. A long wooden staff topped with a curved silver blade.

The Grim Reaper.

The figure moved silently across the lobby floor, gliding between Amber and Clayton with slow, deliberate steps. The reaper stopped in the center, turned to face them both, and raised one skeletal hand.

Amber and Clayton remained motionless, watching.

The Grim Reaper reached up with both hands and slowly lifted the skeletal mask away from her face.

Madoka Kawada stood before them, her expression calm, professional, and faintly theatrical. She held the mask at her side and regarded the two survivors with quiet authority.

"Amber Payne," Madoka said, her voice steady and clear in the hollow silence. "Clayton Halliburton."

She paused, letting their names hang in the cold air.

"Congratulations. You are the surviving monsters of CODE BLACK."

Madoka reached into the folds of her black robe and withdrew two thick sealed envelopes. She stepped forward and handed one to Amber, then turned and handed the second to Clayton.

"Fifty thousand dollars each," Madoka continued, her tone measured and ominous. "Your share of the bounty."

Amber pulled off her horned oni mask, her face sweat-streaked and bruised, her mouth curling into a wicked, triumphant smirk. Beside her, Clayton removed his bone-white skull plate, his eyes cold, impassive, and victorious.

Madoka inclined her head slightly. "Well done."

She stepped back, replaced the Grim Reaper mask over her face, and gestured toward the open glass doors with her staff.

Amber and Clayton exchanged one final glance, then turned and walked toward the exit.

12:15 AM — Departure

The cold autumn night air greeted the three of them as Madoka led Amber and Clayton through the front doors and out into the parking lot. The bus sat waiting at the side of the building, its interior lights glowing warmly against the darkness. The eliminated wrestlers and staff were already aboard, silhouettes visible through the windows.

Madoka stopped at the foot of the steps and watched the two survivors climb aboard. Through the bus windows, the rest of the roster sat slumped in their seats — taped, bloodied, wrapped in blankets, staring at nothing. Madoka looked at the bruised, bloody and battered wrestlers of Splat! Wrestling, and let out a slow breath through her nose.

Madoka Kawada: "Guess we're going to the emergency room."

She offered Amber and Clayton a final, unreadable nod, then followed them up the steps and aboard, pulling the Grim Reaper mask from her face as she went. The bus doors hissed shut behind her.

The engine rumbled to life. The headlights flared. Slowly, the bus pulled away from the abandoned hospital, its taillights fading into the Mississippi night.

12:18 AM

The parking lot fell silent.

The hospital stood tall and dark beneath the pale moonlight, its cracked windows empty, its corridors still.

Then, from the shadows near the eastern wing, a figure stepped forward.

Tall. Cloaked. Wearing a cracked porcelain mask with no features—no eyes, no mouth, no expression. The figure stood motionless at the edge of the lot, watching the distant taillights of the departing bus until they vanished completely into the darkness.

The figure did not move.

Did not speak.

Did not follow.

It simply stood there, silent and unidentified, as the cold wind rustled through the overgrown weeds and the abandoned hospital loomed behind it.
