The Fall of Madison Tower #5

The news of a murder breaks, triggering a cascade of events: a funeral that brings grief and suspicion into the open, official press conferences masking darker truths, and critical moments where evidence surfaces in unexpected hands. The chapter systematically shows how different characters process Riley's death—some with genuine grief, others with calculated manipulation—while a crucial secret emerges: someone who was supposedly unconscious during the murder actually witnessed everything. Key characters make moves to protect themselves or gather leverage, and by the chapter's end, multiple people hold pieces of a puzzle that could topple the entire empire, but they don't yet realize they're all part of the same conspiracy.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

The Ocean's Secret

The night is moonless and cold as Raphael Cyan stands waist-deep in the churning water, the plastic-wrapped body heavy in his arms. His hands are numb—whether from the cold or from shock, he can't tell anymore.

Behind him, on the rocky shore, Eli stands with his phone still recording. Sebastian has already left, satisfied that his leverage is secure. Raphael is alone with his conscience and the dead.

He looks down at the bundle in his arms. Riley Oh. A woman he barely knew. A woman who was trying to save her daughter. A woman who is now dead because she asked the wrong questions.

"I'm sorry," Raphael whispers to the plastic-wrapped form. "I'm so sorry."

He releases the body into the water. It sinks slowly, disappearing into the darkness. Within hours, the currents will carry it to where Sebastian's men have arranged for it to be "discovered." The narrative is already written: Raphael Cyan, ex-convict, murdered Riley Oh in a fit of rage. Case closed.

Raphael wades back to shore, his legs barely supporting him. Eli is already gone, the recording safely stored on his phone—insurance against any future hesitation.

The News Breaks

The morning news anchor's voice is grave as she reports: "Local woman Riley Oh, 42, has been found dead in the ocean near the coastal cliffs. Police have arrested ex-convict Raphael Cyan in connection with her death. Cyan has confessed to the murder, citing a personal dispute with the victim."

Chris Letter sits in his office, watching the news report on his computer screen. His jaw clenches. He knows. Somehow, he knows this wasn't Raphael. This has Sebastian's fingerprints all over it.

He picks up his phone and dials. "We need to talk," he says when the line connects. "About Riley. About what Sebastian did."

The Bank

Jessica stands in the marble lobby of Madison Tower's private banking facility, her face pale. The banker across from her looks uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Gaston," the banker says carefully. "But the account has been emptied. All ten billion dollars that were transferred to Kira Khan's estate have been moved to another account. We don't have authorization to disclose where."

Jessica's hands curl into fists. "When?"

"Three days ago. The transfer was authorized with the proper codes and signatures."

Three days ago. Right after Raphael was forced to dispose of Riley's body. Right after Sebastian consolidated his power.

"Who authorized it?" Jessica demands.

"I'm not at liberty to say, Ms. Gaston. But I can tell you the transfer was made to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands."

Jessica turns and walks out of the bank, her mind racing. Someone has stolen Kira's money. Someone with access to her accounts. Someone close to the family.

She has a terrible suspicion about who.

The Press Conference

Lauren stands at a podium, cameras flashing around her. She's dressed impeccably, her hair and makeup perfect. She looks like a hero.

"I want to thank everyone for their concern during this difficult time," Lauren says, her voice trembling with practiced emotion. "When I learned that my daughter Sloane had been kidnapped by Riley Oh, I knew I had to act. I tracked them down myself and managed to rescue my daughter before any real harm could come to her."

The reporters lean forward, hungry for more details.

"Riley Oh was clearly unstable," Lauren continues. "She had become obsessed with my daughter, and when I tried to intervene, she became violent. I was forced to defend myself and my child. I'm just grateful that Sloane is safe now."

It's a masterpiece of manipulation. Every word carefully chosen. Every gesture perfectly timed. And it's all a lie orchestrated by Sebastian Gaston.

In the audience, Zoey watches with growing fury. She knows the truth. She was there on that cliff. She knows exactly what happened to Riley.

And she knows that Lauren is lying.

The Theater

Chris storms into the newly renovated Skye Theater, where Zoey is reviewing architectural plans. His face is red with anger.

"You bought Riley's shares?" he demands.

Zoey looks up, startled. "Yes. After her death, her shares went to auction. I purchased them. It was a business decision."

"It was opportunistic," Chris snaps. "Riley is barely cold in the ground, and you're already consolidating power. You're just like Sebastian."

"I'm nothing like Sebastian," Zoey says coldly. "And for your information, I bought those shares to protect them. To make sure they didn't fall into the wrong hands."

"Whose hands? Sebastian's?" Chris laughs bitterly. "He's already won, Zoey. He's already taken everything. Riley's dead, Kira's money is gone, and you're standing here pretending you're the hero of this story."

He turns to leave, then pauses at the door. "You know what the worst part is? I think you actually believe that."

The Morgue

Jessica stands over Riley's body, laid out on a cold metal table. The autopsy has been completed. The cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma from the fall. The body is badly damaged from the impact and the time in the water.

Jessica reaches out and gently touches Riley's hand. It's cold. So cold.

"I'm sorry," Jessica whispers. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. I'm sorry I didn't see this coming."

She thinks back to all the times Riley helped her. All the times Riley risked everything to do the right thing. And now Riley is dead, and the man responsible is walking free.

Jessica's grief hardens into something else. Something darker. Something that looks a lot like vengeance.

The Funeral

The cemetery is crowded. Mariah stands at the graveside, her body rigid with shock and grief. She hasn't cried yet. She's beyond tears. She's in that place where emotion becomes something else entirely—a kind of numb rage.

Around her stand the people who knew Riley. Chris and Angel. Zoey, who looks guilty and haunted. Kyle, who looks confused. Jessica, who looks like she's planning something. Raphael, who looks like he's dying inside.

The priest says words about Riley's life, about her strength, about her love for her daughter. But Mariah doesn't hear them. She's staring at the coffin, unable to accept that her mother is inside it.

When the reporters arrive, pushing through the crowd with their cameras and microphones, Mariah snaps.

"What happened to my mother?" one reporter shouts. "Did she really kidnap Sloane Kline?"

"My mother didn't kidnap anyone!" Mariah screams, her voice raw. "My mother was trying to help! She was trying to save someone!"

She turns and runs, her screams echoing across the cemetery. "Mom! Mom, I'm sorry! I'm sorry I wasn't there!"

Jessica catches her before she collapses, holding the girl as she falls apart completely.

The Penthouse

Back at the Gaston penthouse, Penelope makes the mistake of making a comment about Riley.

"Well, at least we don't have to worry about her anymore," Penelope says with a smirk. "She was always so pathetic, trying to—"

Jessica's hand moves so fast that no one sees it coming. The slap echoes through the penthouse like a gunshot.

Penelope's head snaps to the side. For a moment, there's stunned silence.

"How dare you," Jessica says, her voice deadly quiet. "How dare you speak about Riley that way."

Penelope looks to Cross for support, but he turns his back to her. He won't meet her eyes.

"Fine," Penelope says, her voice shaking with rage and humiliation. "I'm done with this family anyway."

She storms to her room and begins packing. Within an hour, she's gone, leaving only a note that says: "I'm staying with friends. Don't bother looking for me."

The Key

Alastair moves through the penthouse like a ghost, careful not to be noticed. He's been searching for something—something that Sebastian has been keeping hidden.

He finds it in Sebastian's private study: a small key, no more than two inches long, hidden in a hollowed-out book on the shelf.

Alastair picks it up and examines it. There's a number engraved on the side: 2847.

A safe deposit box number.

Alastair pockets the key. He doesn't know what it opens, but he knows it's important. He knows it's valuable. And he knows that Sebastian will kill to keep it hidden.

He takes the key and leaves the penthouse.

The Phone Call

Kyle is in his office when his phone rings. The number is blocked. When he answers, he hears a voice—distorted, electronically altered—speaking to him.

"Kyle Kline," the voice says. "I have a job for you."

"Who is this?" Kyle demands.

"Someone who knows what you've done. Someone who knows about the money you've hidden. Someone who knows about the bodies you've helped bury."

Kyle's blood runs cold. "What do you want?"

"I want you to get close to Sebastian Gaston. I want you to gain his trust. And I want you to find out everything he's hiding."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then I'll make sure everyone knows the truth about you. About your crimes. About your complicity in Kira's death."

The line goes dead.

Kyle sits in the darkness of his office, his hands shaking. He's been given an impossible task. He's been given a death sentence.

The Performance

The grand opening of the newly renovated Skye Theater is a glittering affair. The who's who of the city are in attendance. Zoey stands on stage, preparing to perform. She's nervous—more nervous than she's been in years.

She thinks about Riley. She thinks about that moment on the cliff. She thinks about the choice she made.

The music begins. Zoey opens her mouth to sing.

But all she can hear is Riley's voice.

The Flashback

We return to that night on the cliff. The moment after Zoey pulled Sloane from the car.

Zoey runs back toward Riley's car, determined to save her. But as she approaches, she sees Riley's face through the windshield. She sees the fear. She sees the desperation.

And she remembers.

She remembers all the times Riley beat her. All the times Riley got the better of her. All the times Riley made her feel small and powerless.

She remembers the day Riley stole her voice. The day Riley took everything from her.

Zoey stops running.

She looks at Riley. She looks at the car teetering on the edge of the cliff. She looks at the ocean below.

And she makes a choice.

She reaches through the window and shifts the car into neutral.

The car rolls forward. Slowly at first, then faster. Riley's eyes go wide as she realizes what's happening. She tries to grab the steering wheel, tries to stop the car, but it's too late.

The car tips over the edge.

Riley's scream echoes across the cliff as the car plummets into the darkness below.

Zoey stands at the edge, watching. She doesn't move. She doesn't cry. She doesn't do anything but watch as the woman who tormented her disappears into the ocean.

When it's over, she turns and walks back to where Sloane is lying unconscious on the ground.

"It's okay," Zoey whispers to her daughter. "It's all going to be okay now."

But it's not okay. It will never be okay again.

Because Sloane wasn't as unconscious as Zoey thought.

Sloane saw everything.
