CHAPTER THIRTY TWO
Seven Months Earlier
The mental hospital's visiting room smells of industrial cleaner and desperation. Kira Khan sits across from Alastair Becker in the sterile white space, her eyes sharp and calculating. She slides a credit card across the table between them, watching his reaction carefully.
"I'm getting you out," Kira says quietly, her voice carrying absolute certainty. "But you need to be ready. When I call, you move. No questions."
Alastair stares at the card, then at her. "Why would you do this?"
"Because I need someone who understands what it means to be invisible," Kira replies. "Someone the world has already written off."
She stands to leave, but pauses. "Don't use that card until I tell you to. And Alastair? Don't make me regret this."
The scene shifts. We see Alastair in his room at a safe house, wanted posters with Sebastian Gaston's face plastered on the walls. He's been tracking him, studying him. When Zoey enters without knocking, Alastair's jaw tightens.
"You need to leave," he says coldly.
"What is all this?" Zoey demands, gesturing at the walls.
"None of your business. Get out."
But Zoey's already seen too much. She backs out slowly, her mind racing with questions she doesn't want answered.
Present Day
Riley sits across from Raphael in a small café near the university. The investigator's file is spread between them—old case files, confessions, photographs of a woman Riley doesn't recognize.
"Why did you confess to a murder you didn't commit?" Riley asks, her voice steady but her eyes searching.
Raphael's face darkens. He stands abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "Mind your own business, Riley. Some things are better left alone."
He walks away before she can respond, but Riley notices something—or rather, someone. Sebastian Gaston stands in the shadows near the café entrance, partially hidden by a column. He's been listening. His expression is unreadable, but his eyes follow Raphael with predatory interest.
Riley's stomach tightens. She's just made a mistake.
Later That Week
The doors to Zoey's theater open, and Riley walks through them with the confidence of ownership. She's dressed impeccably, her posture radiating power. She approaches the box office manager and hands over a stack of documents.
"I've purchased twenty percent of this facility," Riley announces. "Effective immediately."
The staff exchanges confused glances. Whispers ripple through the theater. Where did Riley get this kind of money? The rumors spread like wildfire through Madison Tower's elite circles.
When Zoey hears the news, she goes pale with rage. She finds Riley in the main theater, standing on the stage as if she owns it.
"How?" Zoey demands, her voice shaking with fury. "How did you get this money?"
Riley turns slowly, a slight smile playing at her lips. "Does it matter?"
"It's Kira's money, isn't it?" Zoey's accusation hangs in the air. "You took Kira's money."
Riley doesn't deny it. Instead, she walks past Zoey toward the exit. "Kira asked me to spend whatever I needed to find something. Someone. I'm doing exactly what she asked."
The scene flashes back to a conversation between Kira and Riley, weeks before the explosion. Kira's voice is urgent, desperate even.
"Find Layla's twin, Riley. Find them and protect them. Whatever it costs, whatever you have to do—find them."
The Hunt
Riley's apartment is covered with photographs, documents, and DNA test results. She's obsessed, driven by a promise to a dead woman. But she doesn't know she's being watched.
Eli sits in a parked car outside Riley's building, phone to his ear. "She's still digging," he reports to Sebastian. "I don't know what she's looking for, but she's spending money like it's water."
"Keep watching her," Sebastian's voice crackles through the phone. "And report everything."
The Incident at College
Sloane arrives at the college with a fresh cut on her forehead, her eye beginning to swell. She's disheveled, frightened. Within minutes, she's being escorted out by security, bundled into a car and driven away from campus.
But it's staged. The cut, the fear—all of it orchestrated. Someone needed to get Sloane away from Lauren, away from whatever influence Lauren had over her.
The escape is short-lived.
Lauren finds her. She always finds her. She forces Sloane back to campus, back to the chaos, back to the control. Sloane's brief moment of freedom evaporates like morning mist.
The Transfer
Sebastian sits in his office, reviewing documents with his lawyer. His expression is calm, almost serene, as he signs his name across the bottom of a transfer agreement.
"Everything goes to Cross," he instructs. "The company, the assets, all of it. Effective immediately."
His lawyer looks confused. "Sir, are you certain? This is a significant—"
"I'm certain," Sebastian cuts him off. "Do it."
Later, Eli reports back to Sebastian in a private meeting. As he speaks, Sebastian's face reveals something unexpected—a secret shared between them.
"Cross and Penelope," Eli says quietly. "They're not twins."
Sebastian nods slowly. "I know."
"One of them isn't yours," Eli continues.
"I know that too," Sebastian replies, his voice devoid of emotion. "And soon, everyone else will know it as well."
The DNA Results
Riley's hands shake as she opens the envelope from the lab. The results are clear, unmistakable. She reads them once, then again, unable to believe what she's seeing.
Penelope Gaston is Layla Kwon's twin.
Penelope's biological mother is Jessica Gaston.
Riley's breath catches. She grabs her keys and rushes toward the door, desperate to reach Jessica with this information. But as she moves through the hallway, her phone buzzes with an alert.
A news notification: "Missing Person Alert: Sloane Kline, Age 22, Last Seen Near Coastal Highway."
Riley's blood runs cold. Lauren has taken Sloane again. And this time, it's different. This time, it feels final.
She doesn't realize Sebastian's car is already following her.
The Chase
The coastal highway stretches endlessly, a ribbon of asphalt between cliffs and ocean. Riley's car weaves through traffic, her eyes darting to the rearview mirror where she sees multiple vehicles pursuing her.
Lauren's car is ahead, Sloane visible in the passenger seat, her head lolling against the window—drugged, unresponsive.
Behind Riley, Sebastian's black SUV closes the distance with terrifying speed.
Zoey's car appears from a side road, joining the chase.
Riley's mind races. She needs to get Sloane away from Lauren. She needs to survive. She needs to reach Jessica.
She makes her move. Her car swerves sharply, cutting off Lauren's vehicle. Metal screams against metal as the cars collide. Lauren's car spins out, tires smoking, and crashes into the guardrail. The impact is violent enough to stun Lauren, to give Riley the precious seconds she needs.
Riley pulls Sloane from the wreckage, half-carrying, half-dragging the drugged girl to her own car. Sloane's dead weight is almost too much, but adrenaline gives Riley superhuman strength.
She gets Sloane into the passenger seat and guns the engine.
But Sebastian is already there.
His SUV blocks the road ahead. Riley has nowhere to go but forward. She accelerates, hoping to ram through, but Sebastian is faster. His vehicle swerves, catching Riley's car at an angle and sending it into a violent spin.
The world becomes a blur of motion and sound. Riley's car rotates, metal groaning, tires screaming. When it finally stops, the rear bumper is hanging over the cliff edge, suspended above the churning ocean hundreds of feet below.
Zoey appears at Riley's window, her face a mask of desperation. "Sebastian, stop! Please!"
But Sebastian doesn't stop. He approaches Riley's car with methodical purpose, his face cold and emotionless. He knows what Riley knows. He knows she'll tell Jessica everything—about Penelope, about Layla, about all of it.
He can't allow that.
"Riley, get out of the car!" Zoey screams, but Riley is frozen, her hands gripping the steering wheel as Sebastian approaches.
Zoey makes a decision. She runs to the passenger side and yanks open the door, pulling the unconscious Sloane from the car. She drags the girl away from the cliff's edge, away from the danger, her own strength fueled by maternal instinct.
Then she turns back toward Riley.
But Sebastian is already there.
He reaches through the driver's window and places a large brick on the accelerator. The engine roars. The car lurches forward, tires spinning against the asphalt, inching closer to the edge.
"No!" Zoey screams, but Sebastian is already walking away, his footsteps echoing across the empty highway.
Riley's eyes go wide as she realizes what's happening. She tries to grab the brick, tries to reach the pedal, but it's too late. The car is already moving, already committed to its trajectory.
She guns the engine one more time, trying to reverse, trying to escape, but the brick holds firm.
The rear wheels leave the asphalt.
For a moment, there's silence.
Then Riley's car tips forward and plummets into the darkness below, disappearing into the churning ocean with a sound like thunder.
The Cover-Up
Hours later, in the depths of Madison Tower's basement, Sebastian's men pull a plastic-wrapped body from the water. They work in silence, their movements efficient and practiced. They've done this before.
The body is carried through the service corridors, past the angel statue in the foyer. They stop at the wall behind it—the same wall that has hidden so many secrets.
They place the wrapped figure inside the hollow space and begin to seal it shut with concrete and brick.
By morning, no one will know Riley Oh ever existed.
The Discovery
It's still raining when Raphael Cyan arrives at Madison Tower with a sledgehammer. He's been summoned here, though he doesn't know why. He only knows that Sebastian Gaston has leverage over him—leverage that will send him back to prison if he doesn't comply.
He walks through the barricade, past the angel statue, and positions himself in front of the wall.
The first swing of the hammer echoes through the empty foyer.
Sebastian watches from the shadows, his expression unreadable. Eli stands beside him, recording everything on his phone.
Raphael swings again. And again. The wall begins to crack, to crumble.
One final swing, and the hole is large enough to see inside.
Raphael's face goes white.
There's a body wrapped in plastic.
He turns to Sebastian, his voice breaking. "What is this? What have you done?"
Sebastian steps forward, his voice soft and deadly. "You're going to take this body back to the ocean, Raphael. You're going to make sure it's found by the authorities. And you're going to tell them that you killed Riley Oh."
"No," Raphael whispers. "No, I won't—"
"You will," Sebastian interrupts. "Because if you don't, I'll send you back to prison for the murder you already confessed to. And this time, there won't be anyone to help you."
Eli holds up his phone, showing the recording function. "And I'll have video of you putting the body in the water. Insurance, you might say."
Raphael drops to his knees, his entire body shaking. He's trapped. Completely, utterly trapped. He'll do anything to avoid going back to prison. Anything.
"I'll do it," he whispers. "I'll do whatever you want."
"Good," Sebastian says, placing a hand on Raphael's shoulder. "That's what I thought."
As Raphael begins to wrap the body in fresh plastic, preparing to transport it back to the ocean, neither man notices the figure watching from the upper level of Madison Tower.
A figure whose eyes burn with rage and recognition.
A figure who now knows exactly what Sebastian Gaston is capable of.
